Best Elopement Weddings in New York City

When is it that a loving couple first decides to have an elopement wedding? Is it when they know that an intimate, memorable ceremony is just the perfect fit for them and their closest friends? Perhaps it's when they decide to have a unique destination wedding.

A couple's dream destination doesn't have to be in some far-off place, 1/2 way around the world. It can be right here, right where they and their close friends are.

By eloping in NYC, in one of the most iconic, remarkable, and exciting places in the world, a couple will have an unforgettable experience in a movie-like setting.

To enjoy this experience stress-free (or at least, stress-less!) it helps to have a better understanding of all the essential steps of the preparation process and to trust the planning of this unique moment of a couple’s life to the professionals.

WHY CONSIDER AN ELOPEMENT INSTEAD OF HAVING A TRADITIONAL WEDDING?

The standard definition of the term “Elopement” has always been a “wedding for two," which often involved the couple going to a destination away from their home, family and friends. In fact, the couple may have not even notified their family and friends of their plans. This kind of elopement is still popular and is a choice some couples make when traveling overseas to get married and if difficult/expensive for potential guests to join them.

In the last few years however, the popularity of this wedding “style” grew significantly not only among those who want to get married away from home, but also among the couples who prefer other beneficial “perks” of an elopement, such as a more casual setting, a minimalist approach and the possibility to choose from a much bigger variety of location options: indoor or outdoor, having a personalized and heartwarming experience (which can never be said about getting married in some government office, btw) and of course, saving money!

In addition, according to the experts, in survey after survey, most newlywed millennial couples prefer to spend money more wisely on their honeymoon, mortgage, business, etc., than on their wedding day.

A modern elopement provides many advantages. It certainly doesn’t mean that a couple has to "tie the knot" in secret or to go to the opposite side of the world to get married. This approach to matrimony is also becoming increasingly relevant and popular as a response to and when considering the events of 2020 and covid-related regulations…

A COVID-ADJUSTED REALITY

The events of 2020 revealed to us all the plain truth that despite our best laid plans and intentions, something external to ourselves can always interfere with those plans.

As a result of the quarantine, thousands of couples all over the globe had to cancel or postpone their celebrations. But there were also those who decided not to wait and still get married this year.

The smart, convenient and practical choice for those couples was, of course, choosing an elopement instead of a traditional full-party celebration.

The new realities of 2020 gave the elopement industry a true “kick” as a result of couples re-evaluating what was truly important in their lives in light of the forces that lay out of their control. Intimacy and communion took precedence over opulence and grandeur and maybe most important of all: loving couples were reminded by tragic circumstances that cherished time spent together is the greatest gift of their union.

NEW YORK CITY ELOPEMENT

Prior to the pandemic, New York was always a very popular destination for out-of-towners to elope. Many locals also chose to have their micro weddings in the city and in doing so, and saved a fortune

We gained our experience in the elopement industry before it became trendy and before local ordinances restricted the size of gatherings.

And even more, we were one of the many local, 2020 couples who chose to elope in NYC!

MY OWN ELOPEMENT STORY OR, “HONESTLY, YOU WILL NEVER KNOW…

...just how much planning it takes once you decide to elope in NY until you do!" This may sound obvious, but it’s important not to underestimate just how many details are involved in perfectly planning this seemingly simplified and "toned-down" event.

I worked as a photographer, assistant, and marriage officiant at hundreds of elopements over the past 6 years. My attitude towards my work was always positive: No matter how knowledgeable I thought I was, I would strive to learn more until I became an expert. And that's exactly what I am today - an expert event planner. So, when it came time to get married this year, I figured I'd plan my own ceremony. "How hard could it be?" I'm an "expert," after all. Boy, did I find out. I forgot that I was supposed to enjoy my time as the bride.

I was too confident in my wedding experience and my organizing skills, and I didn’t take into consideration that I can’t be everywhere at the same time.

Looking back, I know now how much easier and more pleasant it would have been for me as the bride to know that another professional would be taking control of the process: guide the guests; set up the floral arrangements, turn on the aisle music, etc.

Even though the rest of our team did a wonderful job with stunning & long-lasting lasting makeup & hairstyling, a unique bouquet & boutonniere, touching and beautiful photos and a great video, I wished someone else could be in charge of everything overall, so I could have enjoyed my special day to the fullest!

My personal experience in trying to "do-it-all" and be both bride and planner did have one, added benefit, though: For the first time ever, I truly understood exactly how the bride felt - what she was going through and not just on the outside-looking-in from the perspective of a elopement planner. It helped me to better understand the concerns and desires of the soon-to-be-married and just eloped couples.

My wonderful husband and I know what it's like to be both planners and clients. We dedicate ourselves to helping loving couples just like us.

NYC ELOPEMENT PREPARATION GUIDE - NO PLACE IS "THE SAME"

The organizational process becomes easier and more productive when there is a precise guide & checklist of all the things that need to get done are taken into consideration. In other words, the "Who?" "What?" "When's," and "How's?"

I’ve seen many planning guides for full-day weddings online and they seem to cover most of the above questions (the "Who's?" and "What's? etc.) But when eloping in NYC, you have to take into consideration a whole host of factors that are singularly unique to this unique place. After all, NYC is one-of-a-kind, so it makes perfect sense that it offers up it's own set of challenges when planning an event. So, I decided to create a primary guide, custom-tailored for elopement weddings planning in this most special of places, The Big Apple.

Let’s start from the moment you got engaged and decided to get eloped in the "City That Never Sleeps…”

CHOOSE YOUR SEASON

The months from May until early October have traditionally been considered "The" wedding season. In other words, the promise of Spring and Summer and their association with rebirth and renewal have customarily been the preferred seasons when couples choose to commit to a lifetime together.

NYC has all 4 distinctive seasons. Not all places in the U.S. do (never mind the rest of the world!)

Each season in NY has a "look." Each season a "feel." Furthermore, within NYC each location changes from season to season, offering its own "look" and "feel." The perfect location at the perfect time under the perfect conditions is what a loving couple desires and we can help find that for you.

One more thing to consider are tourists and crowds. Yes, believe it or not, we have them! It is NYC, after all. When is the best time to avoid crowds? When is the worst?

A couple are the stars of their event, not "parts of the crowd."

We always keep that in mind.

Summer

Summer in NYC is usually hot and humid and if you are planning on tying the knot in one of these months, you'll want to dress for comfort to beat the heat and not be sweaty. What can be important to take into consideration is that while brides can rely on professional makeup to keep themselves beautiful, grooms can have a difficult time in the heat, especially when wearing suits. As for photography, harsh sunlight can make it harder to get the best photos possible.

Also, summer is a very popular season for tourists. Locals also tend to spend more time in the parks. If you’re planning to elope in the park, the presence of tourists and locals may be disruptive to the "flow" of the ceremony.

For summer elopement weddings, make sure to book your date in advance and especially if you want a weekend date. And remember: Consider choosing lighter-weight outfits that will be more comfortable in hotter weather.

Fall

In the earliest part of September, the temperature can still be very hot. The second 1/2 of the month offers up "the best of both worlds" and retains both the greenery of summer while having the more comfortable temperatures associated with Fall.

October is one of the most beautiful months in the city with it's comfortable temperatures, that special Fall smell in the air and changing foliage which make for such a colorful & gorgeous backdrop.

November is colder, but earlier on in the month not uncomfortably so and still retains those beautiful fall colors. November also has this advantage: It’s the low season for tourists, so the city is less crowded. The event is more exclusively "Yours."

Getting eloped in Autumn is a wonderful choice (and very popular!). Please make sure to book your date well in advance and especially if you want a weekend date, as September and October are booked fast.

Winter

December is a busy season for tourists. People from all over the world come to see The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, stroll down beautifully decorated Fifth Avenue and drink hot apple cider at one of the many festive, seasonal markets.

Even though December is a cold month, be ready to face the crowds, especially in the Midtown area.

January and February are truly cold, though we rarely have snow that lasts for very long. There aren't as many tourists as there are in December. It also can be overcast, which just so happens to be perfect for taking pictures, as the natural light is softened.

One of the cool perks of this season (as well as late November and March,) are the bare trees in Central Park which reveal the majestic cityscape in the background that, for much of the year, goes unseen as a result of the full greenery.

There is a higher availability among the vendors during the season.

I love winter elopement weddings because the atmosphere somehow feels more enchanting and seems to inspire in couples the desire to be more creative regarding their outfits & color choices. Winter truly is magic.

Spring

March is still very cold and windy here. But then... it's in April, especially late, with the sakuras and magnolias blooming, that NYC gets a floral "dress up."

April can still be cold and rainy, however the temperatures rises day-by-day and the smell of spring is in the air. .

May is usually fully green and comfortably warm, but has high rates of thunderstorms.

If you choose to elope in spring, the season when everything is in bloom will make your special moment truly memorable!

Now, after you’ve chosen the season, let’s proceed to the next steps.

CHOOSE YOUR ELOPEMENT PACKAGE

This is the final step in the general preparation process. The next steps will be centered mostly around your personal preparation and will be covered in a separate article.

Selecting the right package, one that suits your style, budget and tastes, is crucial in getting the most out of your elopement experience.

Sometimes, a few dollars more invested in additional services make a huge difference in the quality of your event and are worth every penny!

CHOOSE YOUR TIME

I’ve almost forgotten to mention one, key point which is particularly important to understand when eloping in a public place in NYC.

If you’re choosing afternoon hours, especially on a weekend and/or during the warmer parts of the year, please keep in mind that there may be more of the public around. While this can be manageable on most of the ceremony locations, it can be a distraction afterwards, during the photoshoot.

Another thing: if it’s summer afternoon - it’s going to be the hottest time of the day.

If there's no need to arrange the start time around guests or a reception, you could consider scheduling the Elopement during morning hours.

Finally, don’t feel overwhelmed with the amount of information you need to learn if you want to get eloped in New York. The experts at Perfect Wedding NYC will help guide you through the process and are available to answer all your specific questions based on your preferences and customize the best package that will fit all your needs and satisfy all your expectations!
